In the 1960s (?) when George Lof et al did their World Solar Radiation studies (with the beautiful blue green maps), Lof corresponded by snail mail with research stations all over the world to get data. He said unforgettably in the introduction that the greatest single day total for horizontal radiation came fron a site at the South Pole in December.

The Halley VI is not the first time the UK used renewable in Antarctica. Visitors to the Shackelton hut near McMurdo will find Shackelton used methane to light the inside of their hut during their winter stay, about 100 years ago.
