Wind Power Renews Defunct Nuclear Site

Shoreham, New York [RenewableEnergyAccess.com]

The Shoreham nuclear power plant stopped producing power a decade ago, but the land surrounding the plant still has some generation capabilities. Trustees of the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA), environmental leaders and elected officials gathered at the Shoreham site to dedicate two wind turbines that will supply 200,000 kWh of power annually to Long Island's power grid.

"We look forward to the day when Shoreham is no longer synonymous with a failed nuclear power plant, but instead is recognized as a key participant in LIPA's commitment to clean, renewable energy technology."

"We stand in the shadow of a modern-day Stonehenge, a multi-billion dollar monument to a failed energy policy, to formally commission the operation of a renewable energy technology that will harness the power of the wind for the benefit of Long Island's environment," said LIPA Chairman Richard Kessel.

The two, 50 kW AOC wind turbines were installed on a 47-acre parcel of property at Shoreham that is owned by LIPA. Wind power projects through LIPA are part of the Clean Energy Initiative (CEI), which is a multi-year $355 million program implemented by Gov. George E. Pataki. CEI is intended to promote energy conservation and efficiency, and to research, develop and implement the use of alternative energy technologies such as wind and solar power, and fuel cells.

"We are pleased that LIPA has located its newest wind turbines at Shoreham," said Mary Daum of the Shoreham Civic Organization. "We look forward to the day when Shoreham is no longer synonymous with a failed nuclear power plant, but instead is recognized as a key participant in LIPA's commitment to clean, renewable energy technology."

The Shoreham wind project is the most recent development in LIPA's Land-Based Wind Turbine Demonstration Program, and received grant support from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA).

LIPA is also working with FPL Energy to develop large-scale offshore wind generating projects capable of producing up to 140 MW of electricity, which is enough to supply more than 40,000 average-sized homes in the Long Island area. LIPA's offshore wind project should be located south west of Robert Moses State Park and is scheduled for commercial operation in the summer 2008.
