Number 1 of the top 10 stock listed companies (based on market capitalization) is First Solar Inc. (FSLR). The solar cell company's record-breaking cadmium telluride (CdTe) thin-film technology and massive module production capacity, which is expected to reach 2.3GW in 2011, has garnered FSLR a steady industry leadership since its foundation in 1999.

Although the top 10 is mainly dominated by module manufacturers -- First Solar, REC, Trina Solar, Suntech and Sunpower -- other parts of the supply chain have created solar giants. Number 2, for example, is GCL-Poly Energy, polysilicon and wafer supplier. Number 3, SMA solar technology, makes balance of system (BOS) inverters.

GT Solar International, number 6, makes polysilicon production technology, crystalline ingot growth systems and related photovoltaic manufacturing services for the solar industry.
