Suntech Panels Used for Large Asian PV Plant

The top Chinese solar PV producer Suntech Power said yesterday that it will supply 34.5 MW of panels to a power plant located in Thailand. The project, which will be located just outside Bangkok, will have a capacity of 44 MW.

The power plant will be completed by late 201l. It marks a push by Thailand to support solar, wind and biomass. Thailand has committed to getting 20% of its electricity from renewables by 2022.

In a November 2009 report, the Asian Development Bank projected that energy demand in Asia and the Pacific will grow by an estimated 2.4 percent annually for the next twenty years, a cumulative 80% increase between 2005 and 2030.

Suntech is banking on solar technologies being a major part of that growth in Asia's electricity generation capacity, as economies throughout the region embrace affordable alternatives to carbon-based energy production.

Many analysts are watching burgeoning markets like Thailand, Singapore, China and India, confident that they will play a major role in the growth of the solar industry.
